Playing Lead Guitar

Of course, lead guitar can be played on an acoustic guitar, but some techniques may not be as pronounced as on an electric. The most common techniques for creating lead parts are bending, vibrato and slides.

Electric guitars are easier to play. The strings are lighter and far more comfortable than acoustic guitars. One key aspect which makes electric guitars so appealing is that they are a lot smaller than acoustic guitars, so it does make learning more comfortable.

Firstly, rhythm and lead guitar sound differently because they play different roles in the band. Usually, rhythm guitarists play chords, whereas lead guitarists play individual notes and riffs. In order to be able to perform these roles properly, the guitars themselves need to sound differently.

So, why do bands have two guitarists? Bands have two guitarists in order to thicken up their sound, maintain momentum when switching from rhythm to lead, perform layered parts and add a sense of variety to their sound.

Why Lead is Considered Harder

Now we understand the differences between both lead and rhythm… Playing lead is considered more difficult as it requires the player to move their fingers faster and more intricately for playing melodies, solos, riffs, and other difficult lead techniques.

You should learn acoustic guitar because its harder to play at first and will make your hands and fingers stronger. You should learn on an electric guitar first because it's easier to play.

You can definitely learn on an electric guitar, but overall, acoustic guitar wins out every time. It's easier to sound good, easier to play and it's easier to learn. Overall, it's a simpler experience. The best beginner guitar is a steel-stringed acoustic guitar.

Learning to play acoustic songs on electric guitar can be quite challenge. But as a rule of thumb, turn off all distortion (well, a little crunch could be fine on some tunes... but you're often better with a clean clean sound).
