Though the science behind bite marks has been debunked, it continues to be used in courts. And when presented as scientific evidence by so-called experts in court, bite marks seem to offer jurors a false sense of certainty.

A false report or false positive error occurs when two different samples are mistakenly 'matched' – whether as a result of coincidence, a faulty or misapplied criteria for determining a 'match', confusion, contamination or degradation of the sample [26].

There are seven types of bite marks [6]; 'Haemorrhage' (a small bleeding spot), 'Abrasion' (undamaging mark on skin), 'Contusion' (ruptured blood vessels, bruise), 'Laceration' (near puncture of skin), 'Incision' (neat punctured or torn skin), 'Avulsion' (removal of skin), and 'Artefact' (bitten- off piece of body).

Bite mark analysis is conducted by comparing a sample (such as a bite mark left on the victim's skin) to a sample taken from the defendant (through impressions or photographs), and comparing the unique features of both in order to determine whether the defendant left the original mark.Sep 28, 2018
