Diagnostic devices are devices used to identify the nature or cause of a certain phenomenon, usually related to a medical condition. Examples of diagnostic devices are magnetic resonance imaging apparatuses, temperature sensors or pacemakers.

Class II devices are intermediate-risk devices. Examples include computed tomography (CT) scanners or infusion pumps for intravenous medications. Class III devices are high-risk devices that are very important to health or sustaining life. Examples include pacemakers and deep-brain stimulators.

Additionally, medical devices include in vitro diagnostic (IVD) products, such as reagents, test kits, and blood glucose meters. Certain radiation-emitting electronic products that have a medical use or make medical claims are also considered medical devices.Dec 16, 2019

Class III medical devices are those devices that have a high risk to the patient and/or user. These devices usually sustain or support life, are implanted, or present potential unreasonable risk of illness or injury. They represent 10% of medical devices regulated by the FDA.

Intuitively, all medical equipment are medical devices—but not all devices should be considered equipment. For example, implants and single-use devices are clearly not equipment that needs to be inventoried or repaired occasionally, as they leave the institution with the patient or are discarded after use.

Devices are classified as class C for blood grouping or tissue typing to ensure immunological compatibility of blood, blood components, cells, tissues or organs intended for transfusion, transplantation or cell administration.

• Class 1 Medical Devices. Class I medical devices present minimal potential for harm to the user and are often simpler in design than Class II or Class III devices. Most Class I medical devices are exempt from the good manufacturing practices and/or the FDA notification regulations or the Indian FDA ( CDSCO ) regulations.
