Snakes have some clear differences from other reptiles. They have no limbs, no moveable eyelids, and no ear openings. The teeth of most nonvenomous snakes form 2 rows in the upper jaw and 1 row in the lower jaw. The teeth are curved backward to help keep struggling prey from escaping.

Snakes have several unique body parts. The opening to a snake’s intestinal tract is called the vent. The vent is identified by noting a large, semi-circular scale near the posterior end of the snake. The tail of a snake starts at the vent, and extends to the end of its body.

The skin. Snakes are covered with scales, which are cornified folds in the epidermal layers of the skin. These scales are usually arranged in rows along the body, the numbers and arrangement of which are characteristic of the species.

Since there are no limb girdles associated with the skeleton, there are no good delimiters of regions, but snakes are generally regarded as having only two kinds of vertebrae: body (precaudal) and tail (caudal).

The tail of a snake starts at the vent, and extends to the end of its body. Different species have evolved different types of tails. Tree-dwelling species, such as green tree pythons, have exceptionally long tails that help them grip branches. In contrast, ground-dwelling species, such as kingsnakes, have relatively short tails.
